The University of Auckland and the University of Otago in New Zealand have received approval to begin trials utilizing MDMA a psychoactive drug also known as “Ecstasy” to treat tinnitus, Stuff.com reported.

In previous placebo-controlled studies, researchers have given study participants a small dose of the drug; some participants reported a decrease in tinnitus symptoms, according to the article. Obviously, given MDMA’s reputation as a “party drug” and its status as a controlled substance, there could be legal issues with recommending the drug as a treatment for tinnitus.
